Step Up and Dive In

Things are tough at the moment. There’s a massive shift at hand, a paradigm shift, a global shift, a consciousness shift, hell call it a planetary shift… it doesn’t matter. There’s absolutely no reason to get stuck in the semantics of proper labeling. We can all feel that the world is changing, and it’s doing so fast.

As negative news circulates and resonates so much faster and deeper than positive news, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, even hopeless about the change at hand. Honestly, when I say the world is changing, how many of us think that it’s changing for the better?! I am willing to bet a precious few.

With the world changing, as it is, it feels like the safest thing to do is to duck for cover, take care of yourself, and wait for this whirlwind to blow on by. You can always come up for air when the dust settles.

Well… I’ve got some good news, and some not so great news. The good news is that there has never been a time when the average individual, yes you, has been able to make such a large impact. I’m sure a lot of you, in my generation and younger at least, are thinking that I mean growing your platform via socials, amplifying your voice and inspiring change. And yeah, sure, there’s a lot of value in that, and people are doing it all over the world… but no, that’s not what I’m speaking about here.

I’m calling on you to lean into your interests, take a chance, and go do something that you find important and meaningful. We don’t all need to make huge splashes to right this ship, but we do need to play our part, and create our own positive ripples. People are out there itching for your contribution. It doesn’t have to be self-less, it doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. In fact, it probably shouldn’t be either. Make it something that you love doing, something that serves you in the long run, and even something that gives you a sense of joy in the moment. The only suggestion I will make, is too think outside of the screen. People need real connection, tangible, face-to-face, real. So figure out what you want to do to make the world a better place and dive right in.

The not so great news? Well… you can’t wait for this to blow over. It won’t. Things are not going back to ‘normal’. The longer you wait on the sidelines, the more agency you give away, asking others to make your world better, waiting for others to fix the problem, hoping others find a way for you to be happy. No, the not so great news is that this is on you. Your pursuit of happiness. That’s your responsibility. Every opportunity that you’ve ever wanted is there and waiting, but it’s coming your way without a little gumption. You won’t get much satisfaction, enjoyment or purpose out of the micro-dopamine hits that come from sitting around and hoping someone makes the world better.

The bad news, is that you have to make the world a better place

The good news is that you can.
